How Does Joint Inflammation Work in Scleroderma and What Might Work to Stop It?

I am a Senior Consultant Rheumatologist at the University Hospital Zurich and a Group Leader at the Centre for Experimental Rheumatology. My interest in scleroderma began during my residency, when I first encountered patients living with the disease. I realized there was a strong need to better understand this disabling condition, and I wanted to contribute to that effort.

Our study focused on joint inflammation (synovitis) in scleroderma, a frequent cause of pain and disability. Current treatments are often borrowed from rheumatoid arthritis but don’t work well in scleroderma. By examining joint tissue, we aimed to better understand the biological pathways involved. This line of research could guide the development of more targeted therapies, with the goal of improving treatment for joint problems in people with scleroderma.
